Semaglutide is a medication that helps with weight management. It's given as a once-a-week injection and works by mimicking the effects of a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1, which helps to regulate appetite and food intake. This medication has been shown to be effective in helping people lose weight and maintain weight loss over time.

The starting dose is 0.25mg weekly for 4 weeks, then increased to 0.5mg, 1mg and up to 2mg over 16 weeks based on your provider's order.

Frequently asked questions

What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a novel medication that is FDA-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Given its potent weight loss properties, tirzepatide can be used off-label for obesity treatment. It works as a dual GLP-1 agonist and GIP agonist to maximize similar benefits that are seen with GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide.

Tirzepatide works by mimicking the GLP-1 and GIP hormones that are naturally secreted by the intestine after a meal, which prompts insulin secretion. It also reduces appetite by slowing down the time it takes for the stomach to empty and interacting with areas in the brain harboring GLP-1 receptors to signal satiety. Since the drug mimics hormones that are produced in the gastrointestinal system, side effects tend to be nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation and usually resolve with time.

“Instead of counting calories, the medicine helps a person eat less by signaling to the brain that they are full.”

How does Tirzepatide work?

  • The body releases insulin when blood sugar is high.
  • The body removes excess sugar from the blood.
  • It stops the liver from making and releasing too much sugar.
  • It reduces how much food is eaten.
  • It slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach. This effect lessens over time.

Who can take Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is approved for use in adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity, and may also be used by people without diabetes who have a BMI of 27 or greater and other weight-related health conditions.

How is Semaglutide administered?

Semaglutide is administered via subcutaneous injection once per week using a pre-filled pen.

How long does it take to see results with Semaglutide?

Some people may begin to see weight loss results within a few weeks, but individual results may vary.

For best results, Semaglutide is typically rescribed for a 2-month period as part of a comprehensive weight loss and diabetes management plan.
